Question: Why is it a good idea to get a Tan?

Answer:

Without light, life on earth would be impossible. As human being, our bodies need exposure to light in order to function effectively. Exposure to light suppresses the release of melatonin, which acts as a depressant. It stimulates the production of vitamin D3, essential in the prevention of osteoporosis, other bone diseases, and symptomatic relief of psoriasis. Additional benefits include reduced risk of colon cancer and breast cancer and reduced tendency of the skin to sunburn. FDA regulations prevent medical representations about indoor tanning at present.

In addition, exposure to light provides a psychological lift that enables us to function at our best. Exposure to longer hours of light, particularly in winter months, makes us feel happier and more content. In fact, sunlight deprivation has been linked in research to certain psychological disorders. And a tan can make us look more attractive and feel great, giving us a boost to self confidence.

Question: Is indoor tanning a smart thing to do?

Answer:

Outdoor tanning requires guesswork. Indoor tanning is easy and convenient and eliminates the guesswork. Trained professionals can help you get the beautiful color you want, avoid overexposure, remind you wear your goggles for eye protection, and recommend lotions for application before and after tanning. The privacy of indoor tanning enables you to get that “all over tan” possible with nude tanning.

Question: How does indoor tanning differ from tanning in the sun?

Answer:

They are the same in that both provide ultraviolet (UV) light, which causes the skin to tan. The main difference is that, with outdoor tanning, it is difficult to control the amount of UV rays that you are exposed to. Outdoor tanning often produces an uneven tan, including sunburn. Indoor tanning makes it easy to increase exposure gradually and with greater precision so that the skin can adapt, eliminating risk of sunburn and its harmful effects.. Be sure you adhere to an exposure schedule that takes into account your skin type and time of exposure.

. Eliminate tanning lines in the privacy of our convenient salon with nude or partially nude tanning.

. Weather conditions don’t affect us. Tan day or night, no matter what the season.

. Avoid sunburn by following an appropriate and responsible schedule of exposure.

Remember that tanning in an uncontrollable outdoor environment can be harmful to the skin. The intensity of outdoor exposure can vary greatly based on air pollutants, cloud cover, time of day, altitude, proximity to the equator, and time of year.

. A controlled environment and appropriate exposure schedule makes sunburn less likely.

Question: How do tanning beds and tanning booths work?

Answer:

Tanning beds and tanning booths, just like the sun, produce three types of ultraviolet (UV) rays. UV-C rays are of short wavelength and are potentially the most harmful. Modern tanning lamps filter out harmful UV-C rays. The middle wavelength, UV-B, starts the tanning process by stimulating the melanocyte cells to produce melanin. UV-B rays can also cause sunburn with overexposure. Long wavelength UV-A rays bronze the melanin through a process of oxidization, thus producing the tan. The technology of tanning lamps has evolved to produce an optimal balance between UV-A and UV-B rays, while eliminating UV-C rays, to produce the best possible tanning results.

Question: What if I have skin that is so fair that I can never tan outside due to the danger of sunburn?

Answer:

Be aware that tanning lamps work just like sunshine. So if your skin never produces a tan from the sun, the same will be true of indoor tanning. However, if you have a tendency to burn then it turns into a tan, or you’ve been tan in the past (like when you were a kid and played outside all the time) or parts of your body that are exposed all the time are tan (commonly known as a farmer’s tan) and the rest is pale then indoor tanning is an excellent option for you. It gives you the ability to time your exposure precisely and even out your tan. Begin with exposure of short duration and gradually increase as your skin adapts. Let your tanning professional help you decide on the proper schedule based on your skin type.

Question: How frequently should I tan?

Answer:

Regular tanning is required to produce a beautiful depth to your tan. Skipping visits will allow your tan to fade. The skin does much of its tanning work between visits, so we recommend allowing 48 hours between sessions for best results. However, it is okay to tan once every 24 hours if it suits your schedule better. When you have achieved your desired tan, a maintenance schedule is needed of two to three visits per week in a “base bed” and much less frequently in advanced equipment. Keep your skin moisturized with a lotion formulated especially for tanning to prolong the life of your tan.

Question: How long does it take to tan the skin to the desired color?

Answer:

Results are frequently noticeable immediately, even after the first session. Most people need three to five sessions to build a good base for the desired color. For an immediate tan, consider our VersaSpa Spray-on Tanning or a combination of spray-on and tanning lamps for fastest results. If you are planning a vacation, it is always best to tan for a couple weeks before your trip to condition the skin and avoid potential sunburn. Specially formulated lotions can keep your skin moist and promote better tanning results.

Question: How long should I tan on my first visit?

Answer:

Let your tanning professional help you determine the length of your session based on an analysis of your skin tone and type and based on how long since your most recent tan.

Question: What should I wear?

Answer:

Rule of thumb: less is better. Unlike the beach or a pool, you may choose to wear just your underwear or nothing at all. Just be careful of sensitive areas that never get exposure to light. It is helpful to cover these areas for part of the exposure time. Gradual exposure can prevent overexposure. One part of your tanning wardrobe that is not optional is eye protection. Even closed eyelids do not provide sufficient protection for the eyes. Tanning, whether indoors or outdoors, can cause temporary or permanent damage to the eyes, and it is easy to protect your eyes with goggles.

Question: Are goggles required?

Answer:

Yes. They are required by law in tanning salons. Approved eye protection can prevent night blindness and reduced color perception. Eyelids alone will not provide adequate protection, whether tanning indoors or outdoors.

Question: What type of tanning lotion should I use?

Answer:

In recent years, special lotions have been formulated containing nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and other beneficial enriching ingredients. They act to replenish the natural qualities of the skin to give you a healthier-looking, long lasting tan. Be sure to use one of these specially formulate lotions to help you derive maximum benefits from each tanning session. Remember that healthy skin tans faster and will retain the desired color longer.

Question: What are “upgrade” machines?

Answer:

Upgrade tanning equipment provides up to eight times the power of base equipment with lamps of greater intensity and the ability to vary the mix of UV-A and UV-B rays. This safe new technology enables you to get a faster tan, with more deep color for a longer lasting tan. These advanced machines feature upgraded cooling systems, specialized facial lamps, and a gentler combination of tanning rays.

Question: If I’m really in a hurry, can’t I tan more than once in 24 hours?

Answer:

To get an “instant” tan you should consider using our sunless VersaSpa Spray Booth. In just seconds you can have the natural-looking color you want. If you prefer traditional tanning, your skin needs up to 24 hours to start to develop a tan. The FDA prohibits tanning more frequently than once per 24 hours because of the risk of unintentional sunburn. There is no such limitation for spray booth tanning. Spray booth tanning IS allowed on the same day as a traditional tanning session.

Question: Why don’t my legs tan as deeply as the rest of my body?

Answer:

Skin on the legs is thicker and therefore tans more slowly. In addition, leg shaving exfoliates the topmost skin cells along with part of your tan.

Question: How can I help my tan last longer?

Answer:

Tanning moisturizers that have been specially formulated for indoor tanning help replenish vitamins and nutrients that your skin needs in order to be healthy, smooth, and younger-looking. In addition, moisturizers help skin retain deep color and healthy glow. So MOISTURIZE!

Question: Do all types of skin take a tan?

Answer:

“Type 1” skin will not tan. However, a gorgeous tan is still possible with our UV-Free Spray-on Tanning process. Let our tanning professionals help you determine the best type of tanning solution, based on your skin type. Here are the six basic skin types:
Skin type 1: Always burns and will not tan
Skin type 2: Burns easily, but tans somewhat
Skin type 3: Sometimes burns, but can take a gradual tan
Skin type 4: May burn minimally, but always tans well
Skin type 5: Rarely burns, tans deeply
Skin type 6: Almost never burns, due to deep pigmentation

Question: Should I remove my contact lenses when tanning indoors?

Answer:

Most people can leave their contact lenses in place while tanning. Others find that the heat from tanning lamps may cause eye dryness, leading to discomfort for those who wear contact lenses. You can experiment with and without your contacts in place to find out which is more comfortable. In either case, always wear goggles to protect your eyes.

Question: Are there times when I should not tan?

Answer:

Avoid tanning when pregnant unless approved by a physician. The heat produced by the equipment tends to increase the body temperature and might cause adverse effects in the unborn child. UV rays from, whether from natural sunlight or tanning lamps, does not affect tissue below the skin surface, nor does it affect the unborn baby. We allow pregnant women to use our tanning equipment and require the written permission of a doctor.

Question: Are there food, drugs, or soaps that can effect my tan?

Answer:

Certain ingredients in food, shampoos, and soaps can produce photosensitivity, which could lead to overexposure and potential sunburn. Perfumes and colognes may contain Furocoumarins, a compound found in plants and fruits. Their natural oils can cause over-sensitivity to UV light. Foods containing photosensitizing agents include celery, carrots, lime, coriander, parsley, fennel, dill, buttercup, mustard, and fig. Not everyone will experience a reaction, or the same level of reaction, although a reaction could appear in someone with no history of problems. By the same token, a reaction may not be experienced every time by someone who is sensitive to these ingredients.

Some medications are photosensitizing, and tanning is not recommended if you are taking them, because they can increase your risk of overexposure. Speak to your physician or consult with your tanning professional for a list of photosensitizing medications. Here is a partial, though not comprehensive list: Accutane, Achromycin, Actidil, Actifed, Adrueil, Aldactazide, Aldoclor, Aldoril, Ambenyl, Ancobon, Apresolene-Esidrix, Aquatenson, Asendin, Azo Gantanol, Azo Gantrisin, Azulfidine, Bactrim, Bainetar, Barbiturates, Benadryl, Butazolidin, Capoten, Cesamet, Cipro, Clinoril, Compazine, Danocrine, Dapsone, Declomycin, Deconamine, Diabeta, Diabinese, Dilantin, Dimetane, Dincardin, Dlulo, Diupres, Diuril, Diutensen-R, Dyazide, Dyrenium, Elavil, Endep, Enduronyl, Esidrix, Esimil, Estar Gel, Etrafon, Exna, Fansidar, Flexeril, Folex, Fulvicin U/F, Gantanol, Garamycin, Glucotrol, Grisactin, Haldol, Hibiclens, Hispril Spansule, Hydromox, Hygroton, Inderide, Intal Inhaler, Intron A, Lasi x, Librium, Limbitrol, Lozol, Ludiomil, Marplan, Maxzide, Mellaril, Mepergan, Mexate, Mexate-AQ, Minizide, Minocin, Moduretic, Motrin, Mykrox, Naquival, Naturetin, NegGram, Neptazane, Normozide, Noroxin, Norpramin, Optimine, Oreticyl, Ornade Spansule, Orudis Capsules, Pamelor, Pediazole, Periactin, Permitil, Pertofrane, Phenergan, Phisohex, Polaramine, Prolixin, Quindex, Quinidine, Quinine, Rauzide, Renese, Ru-Tuss II Capsules, Seldane, Septra, Ser-Ap-Es, Serentil, Serepasil, Sinequan, Sparine, Stelazine, Sumycin, Surmontil, Tacaryl, Taractan, Tavist, Tegretol, Temaril, Tenoretic, Terramycin, Thalitone, Thorazine, Timolide, Tofranil, Tolazamide, Tolinase, Trandate HCT, Triaminic TR, Vaseretic, Vasotec Tablets, Velban, Vivactil, Voltaren Tablets, Zaroxolyn,

Question: Does tanning cause wrinkles?

Answer:

Our skin will wrinkle naturally with the passage of time, even without tanning. Diet, genetics, certain behaviors such as cigarette smoking, and environmental pollutants can potentially cause more wrinkles than moderate tanning. Overexposure can cause wrinkles and should be avoided. Our skin is built to sustain moderate tanning and is not considered to cause wrinkles.

Question: What causes white spots to appear?

Answer:

Tinea Versicolor is a skin condition caused by a microscopic fungus from the scalp. These fungi fall onto exposed body parts and leave bleached-looking areas. Untreated, these can spread. Tinea versicolor coats the skin and screens the cells like a high-SPF sun blocker. Bleached areas should be protected from further UV exposure until they develop melanin again. Topical treatments are available. An easy treatment is to try Selsun Blue dandruff shampoo. The active ingredients, if allowed to penetrate the skin for ten minutes, may provide relief. For more serious conditions, consult your physician or a dermatologist.

Question: Can indoor tanning be used to treat acne?

Answer:

Phototherapy is a commonly-used therapy in the treatment of skin disorders. Acne is often caused by oily skin, and tanning can help dry the skin. This may help reduce the frequency of outbreaks in chronic acne conditions and may even reduce outbreaks if the condition is mild. Some drugs used in the treatment of acne, such as tetracycline and Retin-A, can cause photosensitivity. Limit or avoid exposure to sunlight or tanning lamps if you are taking these drugs. Ultraviolet light treatments should be administered only by a qualified physician. Tanning salons may not assert benefits of tanning for purposes other than cosmetic coloring, due to FDA regulations.

Question: What is the condition known as SAD?

Answer:

SAD is an acronym for Seasonal Affective Disorder, a form of depression. Scientists have found evidence that many people require greater exposure to light in order to function normally. Melatonin helps induce sleep at night, but if generated during daytime hours can produce feelings of depression. Bright light, like summer sunlight at midday, causes the body to suppress the release of melatonin. Exposure to additional light can make people feel more alert and alive, leading to a greater sense of alertness, well-being, and enjoyment. Light sources that emit only visible light are often used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Sub-syndrome Seasonal Affective Disorder (SSAD).

Question: Should I use SPF on my lips?

Answer:

Yes you should! Your lips cannot tan. The vermillion border—the pink skin of the lips—needs an SPF sun blocker for protection.

Question: Do you have UV-Free Sunless spray tanning services?

Answer:

Yes, we do. We have a VersaSpa System which has three levels of spray tanning, a prep treatment and an anti-aging hydration treatment that can be combined with the spray tan or done separately to give your skin a special all over treat. See the VersaSpa section in our website for more details.

Question: How do I get the best results from the VersaSpa Sunless Spray Tan System?

Answer:

. Shower and exfoliate ahead of time. Do not apply any lotions, make-up, or creams after showering; they can block absorption of the tanning solution and result in blotchy and/or uneven color.

. Come in at least 6 to 24 hours ahead of time to give the solution ample amount of time to develop. We use a clear solution that takes 4 to 6 hours for color to start to develop and will be fully developed in 12 to 24 hours.

. Avoid splashing water, showering, and heavy exercising while color is developing

. Consider adding the prep-solution to your spray tan session. It will neutralize the skins natural oils and add conditioners to allow the cells to maximize absorption of the tanning solution for better, longer lasting results.

. If you’ve never used our VersaSpa and are planning to tan for an important event, we recommend coming in at least one week ahead of time to do a trial run. We have three levels of color to choose from. It’s best to get an idea ahead of time about which level you are most comfortable with.
